Hi everyone,
I keep thinking about that old song, “What a girl wants, what a girl needs...”
Lately, my social feeds have been flooded with the two extreme sides of modern dating. On one side, you have women declaring they would rather stay single and protect their peace than deal with emotionally unavailable partners. On the other side, you have a vocal group of men demanding “traditional values” while complaining that women bring nothing to the table.
It’s easy to look at this and feel discouraged, but I don’t think it’s sad - I think we are witnessing a massive human evolution, and a lot of people are pushing back out of pure defense.
In this week’s Carmen Talk, I wanted to step away from the internet generalizations and speak on this from my own perspective.
Over my lifetime, I’ve watched the world open up for women. We’ve been empowered to choose our own paths, build independent financial lives, and break out of rigid historical boxes. (Fun fact: Did you know that just over 50 years ago, banks could legally deny a woman a credit card or loan without a male co-signer? We’ve come a long way!)
But here is the friction point: while women’s lives have radically evolved, a lot of traditional roles for men have completely stagnated.
In this episode, I’m diving into:
The “Hard-Wired” Myth: Why neuroscience completely debunks the idea that men are biologically blueprintedd to be the sole “protectors and providers.”
A Lesson in Boundaries: A personal (and pretty creepy) story about an anonymous letter sent to me and the stark difference in how my male vs. female friends reacted to my safety concerns.
Showing up at your A+ Game: Navigating changing income dynamics, basic grooming, first-date etiquette, and why equal footing matters.
At the end of the day, the real goal isn’t about fitting into archaic, old-school structures. It’s about finding a partnership where you can compromise without sacrificing your individuality - and choosing solo peace over a relationship that doesn’t make you feel just as good as you do when you’re by yourself.
As always, thank you so much for hanging out and stopping by. Don’t forget that All About The Joy is a network of shows, so be sure to check out our other weekly programs on the channel!
Be better and stay beautiful, folks. Have a sweet day!
Carmen
